Proper use of the BIOTIC Phocea Dermal Test

Before a dermopigmentation on your patient or client, it is important to ensure that they are no risk for a post-tattoo reaction. To do this, we support you with clear and safe tools and products.

In order to protect you legally and to protect the health of your customers, BIOTIC Phocea has developed a health questionnaire. It includes a non-exhaustive list of the most important questions. Thanks to this commented questionnaire you will know in which cases to accept or refuse to have pigmentation (questionnaire and answers written by a doctor).

In addition, if your client is suitable for pigmentation, you can carry out a tattoo test using the Dermal Test: this is a universal allergy test for all BIOTIC Phocea pigments. You just need to make a painless point behind the ear, wait a month and check the good tolerance of the product.

To fully understand the usefulness of the Dermal Test, it is important to remember some basic notions, such as the composition of the pigments used for permanent makeup.

Coloring dispersions, commonly called pigments, are composed of different products:

The pigment itself, which is in powder form, and which can be of organic chemical formula of synthetic or natural origin (plant, animal, fossil) or of mineral chemical formula (metal oxides). The organic pigment class is >95% synthetic, while the mineral class is approximately 50% natural and 50% synthetic. With the advent of organic, tomorrow, the vast majority of mineral pigments will be of natural origin.

The solvent is most often water or alcohols (glycerin, propylene glycol, ethyl or isopropyl alcohol).

Additives provide additional properties to the finished product. They can be preservatives, polymers, pH modifiers, healing products, texturing agents or others.

The different components of a pigment mixture can, in certain fairly rare cases, cause allergic reactions in customers with allergies. Hence the importance of carrying out a test before proceeding with pigmentation.

You can do a test with the color you are going to use or with the Dermal Test which contains all the colors. In fact, the allergic reaction is (almost) not dose-dependent.

Ideally, you should do 2 tests one month apart. The first could raise awareness, without reaction, and the reaction will then occur during the 2nd test. It should be kept in mind that the mechanisms of allergy remain specific to each individual.

The test is carried out by pigmentation (in a hidden area, behind the ear for example). We look at the condition of the area in contact with the product in the minutes following pigmentation, at 3 days and at one month (delayed allergic reaction, hardened appearance of granuloma or other). In the event of a reaction, we advise you to contact your doctor or dermatologist.
