Corneal tattooing highlighted in Alicante, Spain

On May 24 and 25, 2024, the world's first eye color change congress was held in Alicante, Spain.

For this first edition, the global ophthalmology community gathered in Alicante to discuss eye color change. 

The KOLOR congress  was a new opportunity to share the latest advances and innovations in the field of eye color change, learn about the latest industry offers, as well as network with colleagues and experts from around the world. The scientific committee was chaired by the great professor Jorge ALIO, pioneer and expert in corneal tattooing.

The KOLOR Congress promotes excellence in clinical practice, research and education.

With 30 years' experience in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Tiziano created BIOTIC PHOCEA laboratories in 1999 to meet a medical need: sterile, single-use pigments meeting European CEIIb Medical Device standards (BIOCHROMAEYES®).

Annular keratopigmentation is a new corneal surgery technique using a femtosecond laser. The principle involves cutting a thin lamella through the cornea (the transparent part of the eye's surface) to create a channel into which a colored pigment is injected.

Corneal tattooing, or keratopigmentation, is used to repair iris defects in the sighted eye. This technique has the advantage of simplicity over iris sutures, rings or prostheses. In fact, the technique makes it possible to remain on the surface by depositing pigment in a ring cut into the cornea. The surgical procedure doesn't even require sutures. Initially used for iris defects or opaque corneas, this technique is now used for purely aesthetic purposes to change eye color.

As FLAAK by NEW COLOR (refractive surgery clinic in Nice) explains : 

« Initially used for therapeutic purposes, keratopigmentation was developed in the 2000s for eye reconstruction and traumatic irises. The safety of the biocompatible pigment with the cornea, the quality of the results obtained and the satisfaction of the patients have led, since 2010, to extend the technique to aesthetic indications. »

Ophthalmic tattooing in complete safety

Aesthetic ophthalmic tattooing was born of the experience of reparative keratopigmentation of iris defects, using the brand's medical pigments. Given the aesthetic quality of iris repair using this technique, and encouraged by the absence of complications, keratopigmentation became a purely aesthetic technique for changing eye color. The good coverage of the underlying iris, the quality and naturalness of the colors, combined with the partial reversibility of the procedure, made it possible to apply the reparative technique to aesthetics.
